Distressed Wood Designs

“Distressed” is a term describing several techniques that transform the finish of new wood by making it appear older and worn. The imperfections can be added by hand or by using tools or chemicals. Distressed wood can add a rustic or vintage aesthetic look to any room.

Several techniques can be used to turn new store-bought wood into something that looks like it has a story to tell. For starters, we prefer to purchase a soft wood with imperfections and flaws such as knots, chips, or dark stripes. Then the wood is cut down to size with all corners sanded for a rounder, smoother edge. The next step is to smack each board with various objects to create dents, dings, and divots. Several small shallow holes can be punched in with an Awl, and various tools can be used to scratch up the wood for that used rough unfinished look. Wormholes can even be added for the appearance that insects were living in the wood at one point in time.

Once all the distressing has been completed it's time for a light sanding to bring out the wood's natural grain and beauty. Wood stain and sealant, paint, or a milk paint is then applied to add the perfect rustic finish.
