End-Grain Cutting Designs

End-grain cutting exposes the ends of the boards on the surface in a mosaic pattern. As so many more wood pieces are involved in the process, it takes a lot more time and precision to assemble, making it more expensive. End-grain is by far stronger than edge-grain.

End-grain is the grain of wood seen when it is cut across the growth rings. Rather than cutting a plank of wood the length of the trunk, end-grain wood is actually cut at a 90-degree angle to the grain. This type of cut exposes the character of the wood rings and graining.

In end-grain woodworking, all the strips are placed so the end-grain faces up with each one shifted sideways so the glue joints in each strip are offset from the ones in the neighboring strips. A circular saw and edge guide are used to trim one side square to the ends. The other side will be trimmed with a table saw then ran through a  planer to smooth out the faces. Each vertical corner will be rounded over using a router. The board will then be sanded to a smooth finish and rubbed down with mineral oil.
