Fractal Wood Designs
Fractal wood burning is a process that involves adding a coat of electrolytic solution to the surface of the wood and then allowing two electrodes to pass high-voltage electricity across them. The electricity burns the wood in patterns resembling lightning flashes or tree limbs.
Fractal Wood Burning
Like snowflakes, no two burns are alike. We use various woods, add an electrically conductive solution, and then apply high-voltage electricity through a transformer using two probes. The wood burns from one probe to the other, creating fractal burns or the branching electric discharge resembling tree-like patterns. This pattern is also similar to lightning bolts and is known as Lichtenberg figures.
Fractal wood burning can be incredibly dangerous if performed in the wrong manner so do not try this on your own. The circuit produces an extremely strong electrical current (approx. 2,000 volts) which can be deadly if users make contact with any wood or metal while using a homemade device.
